To keep up with ever increasing bodymaker speeds, Pride Engineering created a bottom former / domer with softer donut springs which gently absorb the shock that would otherwise cause metal fatigue in bodymaker components.  Absorbing this stress also reduces the pinching that may cause split domes, keeps dome/panel depth consistent, and reduces metal fatigue to avoid bodymaker ram linkage component failures.

Controlled Clamping Pressure Reduces Split Domes at Any Speed
Earlier models of the Pride domer had the most consistent clamping pressure in the industry – but higher production speeds and thinner container stock required even more uniform and controlled clamping pressure to reduce split or cracked domes.

Controlling clamping pressure requires you to control air surge behind the domer piston.  Today, most bodymakers cycle too fast to ever benefit from an outboard surge tank. Air cannot pass into the airline and down to a surge tank fast enough to prevent compression of the air behind the piston.
